Accidents are usually hectic scenes, and everything moves quickly. If you are involved in a bicycle accident, it is very important to take as many pictures as you can. Pictures will not only provide evidence in your accident claim they can also justify your injuries and help avoid undervalued settlement offers.

Taking Effective Accident Pictures

Following your bicycle accident, if you are able, you want to take as many pictures as you can. Most everyone has a smartphone that will add timestamps to every picture you take. Multiple pictures will often be more effective than recordings, however, a video recording can also be helpful for investigators.

Other tips for taking effective accident pictures include:

  • Take pictures of the accident scene – Try to take pictures of the entire scene and use the panoramic mode on your camera if you have that available.

  • Take pictures of traffic signs and road conditions – Include different angles of the accident scene and any issues that the roadway may have had.

  • Take pictures of your bicycle and the vehicles involved – Investigators want to see not only the damage to your bicycle but the damage to the other vehicle involved. Include any skid marks on the road, the place where the vehicle stopped, and the vehicle license plate.

  • Take pictures of your injuries – Take these pictures as soon as you are physically able and make sure you keep a record of subsequent medical visits and procedures, even if you don’t feel that you were seriously injured.

  • Take pictures of any other property damage you sustained – If you were carrying anything with you on your bicycle, such as work-related items in a backpack, document that they were damaged.

  • Document the weather conditions at the time of your accident – This is very important, especially for accident reconstruction or if the at-fault driver attempts to use weather conditions as an excuse for the accident.

Of course, it is more important to seek out medical treatment immediately following a bicycle accident if you were injured. If possible, have a friend, family member, or riding partner take pictures for you, or you can return to the accident scene within a few days.

Remember, your health and well-being are more important following a bicycle accident. You should also consider contacting an experienced personal injury lawyer to represent you and advise you on how to proceed during this difficult time.
