Accidents with Unruly or Uncooperative Drivers
While an auto accident can be an immediate cause of stress, not to mention the risk of injury, in most cases the drivers involved intend to be courteous, get out of the way of traffic, and handle the paperwork and necessary steps with law enforcement when they arrive on-scene. In some cases, however, the other driver may be rude, uncooperative, or unwilling to provide insurance information, and if you ever find yourself in this situation.
Here are some things to keep in mind to make sure it’s handled properly without taking a turn for the worse:
- Avoid provocation – Even if the other driver is rude or aggressive in his communication with you, it’s always best not to go along with it. Your safety is the top priority, and if you are of sound mind and body after the accident, you must only cooperate with law enforcement to exit the situation in a prompt and efficient manner. If the driver won’t provide his information, chances are slim that you won’t receive it eventually; if necessary, you will work with law enforcement to obtain necessary information even without the driver knowing you’re doing so.
- Obtain the license plate number – As soon as you’re able to do so, write or record the other driver’s license plate number. This is especially important if you believe there’s a chance they might leave the scene of the accident before law enforcement arrives, which is another crime on its own.
- Contact the police – There are often witnesses to auto accidents, but don’t immediately assume that someone else will call 911 for you. Take the initiative and make the call, as it will also save you time on your official accident-report and may convince the other driver to provide you his information.
- Contact an attorney – It’s unfortunate that some drivers who are involved in accidents make the aftermath hostile and more complicated than need be, but it will not stop you from getting the compensation you deserve. Speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible to establish your case and ensure that your rights are protected.
