A six-car accident in Niles on Wednesday night left three people in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The accident occurred just before 11 pm in the 8200 block of Dempster Street. The driver of a Ford pickup was driving west and crossed into an eastbound lane due to a medical condition. The Ford collided head-on with a taxi, and four other vehicles collided as a result.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Melquiades Rodriguez, 27, of Niles, and he was treated on the scene. Three others were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Niles police Sgt. Robert Tornabene declined to provide any details about the driver’s medical condition, and the road was closed from Cumberland to Prospect for almost two hours during the investigation and cleanup.

Rodriguez was charged with a felony count of driving on a revoked license and a misdemeanor count of driving without a valid license. He was also cited for improper lane usage and driving in the wrong lane, and he is expected to appear in court on November 5.
