Icy roads are thought to have caused a driver to lose control of her car and strike an oncoming vehicle, according to Illinois State Police. Two residents from Joliet were killed and a third critically injured when their vehicle lost control on Route 52 near Manhattan on Saturday.

According to Sgt. Scott Angus, the victims were Keyshanna Lucas (20), the driver, and Sharquece Baker (16), who was a passenger in the front seat. Baker was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:30 pm and Lucas was pronounced dead less than ten minutes later at Silver Cross Hospital.

The back seat driver, a 19-year-old man, is still in critical condition at Silver Cross, according to police. The three were heading southbound on Route 52, close to South Cedar Road, at approximately 1:15 pm when Lucas lost control of the vehicle, swerving into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The husband and wife in the other vehicle were unharmed.
