According to police, low visibility caused a multi-vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of I-57 near Peotone.

Illinois State Police say fog covered the area at the time of the accident on Thursday, which shut down traffic in both directions. Lanes began to reopen several hours later as the wreckage was cleared away.

At least three semi-trailer trucks were involved in the accident, one of which caught fire. One vehicle was trapped under a semi truck. Both heavy cranes and extrication equipment was brought to the scene.

Several people were taken to local hospitals, according to State police spokeswoman Monique Bond.
