Working on the farm is both rewarding and hazardous. Agricultural careers rank as one of the most dangerous occupations in the U.S. with 22 of every 100,000 farmworkers dying in a work-related accident annually. While there are many types of situations where a farm employee could be injured on the job, typically these five (5) accidents are the most common on the farm:

  • Overturning machinery – Tractor rollovers are the most common type of overturning machinery accidents, but any type of farm equipment, including all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and combines, can rollover given the right topographical conditions. While newer combines and tractors are equipped with rollover protection structures (ROPS), many older models do not, or farm employees do not use seat belts in conjunction with the protective cabs.
  • Animal injuries – Farm animals that kick can cause serious and deadly injuries. Cattle, horses, goats, sheep, and pigs can injure anyone that is caught off-guard or lax in safety procedures.
  • Asphyxiation – Working in a grain silo or bin can lead to asphyxiation from either poor ventilation or standing on loose, deep piles of grains. Farmers should avoid working alone in these areas as asphyxiation accidents can occur quickly.
  • Falls – Barn structures, like silos and barns, are often quite tall. One slip can be fatal.
  • Entanglements – Farm equipment is made of many moving parts. Clothing, jewelry, and body parts can quickly be pulled in, resulting in serious and sometimes deadly injuries.
Agricultural jobs rank as one of the most dangerous in the U.S. If you or a loved one was injured, you may be entitled to compensation depending on the circumstances of your accident.
