A back injury is a general term encompassing many different types of damage or trauma to the connective tissues of the back, including bones, muscles, tissues, tendons, ligaments, and more. They can be caused by physical exertion, a fall, a sudden movement causing stress to the back, sports, automobile accidents, and more.
The spine is an extremely essential part of the body. It supports and controls our posture, allows for most of our movements such as bending or rotating, and houses countless amounts of sensitive nerves that are protected by our spinal column and control our body’s functions and processes. Within the spinal column, there are five distinct spinal regions that have their own function and serve as a necessity. These five regions include the following:
  • The cervical spine – This is the uppermost portion of the spine, where the neck and upper back are located. It is made of seven vertebrae and supports head and neck movements.
  • The thoracic spine – This is the middle portion of the back which is made of 12 vertebrae. It protects vital organs such as the heart and lungs by holding the rib cage.
  • The lumbar spine – This is the lower portion of the back which is made of five vertebrae. It largely assists with bearing the weight of our body and carrying extra weight, which is why lower back pain is the most common type of back pain.
  • The sacrum – is an even lower portion of the back made of five sacral vertebrae that are fused together. These bones form the pelvic girdle, which connects the lower half to the upper half of our bodies.
  • The coccyx – is known as the tailbones and is made up of four vertebrae. It provides attachment and for ligaments and an attachment point for muscles in the pelvic floor. It also helps to stabilize and support our bodies while sitting.
