Handling Chemicals
A wide range of chemicals and pesticides are used in farm/agricultural work, some of which can pose serious safety risks if not handled properly. While agricultural workers are responsible for exercising proper caution to protect their well-being, employers are also legally responsible for fulfilling a duty of care to mitigate the risks of accidents and resulting injuries to their workers.
Here are some safety tips courtesy of the National Farmers Union (NFU) for handling chemicals:
- All farm workers who handle chemicals and pesticides should be properly trained to do so. Chemical/pesticide safety courses are available and it’s not uncommon for states to require specific training and certification to handle these substances.
- Workers should read “materials safety data sheets” to better understand how to handle particular chemicals, what to do in emergency situations, and how to mitigate the risks of exposure.
- Farmworkers should always wear the proper protective equipment, such as gloves, respirators, and eye protection. Remember, chemicals can enter the body in four main ways: ingestion, inhalation, transdermal (through the skin), and ocular (through the eyes).
- Chemicals should always be properly stored and kept in a locked area where children and animals cannot get near them.
- Always wash your hands after using, handling, or storing chemicals, and change clothes if necessary, to avoid transferring the chemicals into your body in any way.
