Trampolines were first introduced in the 1930s by circus acrobats and since the 1950s, the recreational use of trampolines has increased in the U.S. with over 500,000 backyard trampolines being purchased yearly. While most people would consider a trampoline a fun way to keep their children active, in actuality it is one of the toys with the highest rate of injury for both children and adults.

Why Trampolines Are Dangerous

Over the past decade, the number of trampoline accidents and injuries has increased steadily. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that there are over 100,000 emergency room visits related to trampoline accidents for children under 18 every year, and after a recent study done by The Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program, the group found that trampolining is second behind downhill skiing in types and proportion of injuries sustained.

Some of the most common reasons why trampoline accidents occur include:

  • Lack of supervision or instruction for safe usage
  • Falling from the trampoline
  • Missing protective devices
  • Improperly assembled trampolines
  • Collisions with other users
  • Attempting to do tricks such as flips or somersaults

Approximately 50% of the injuries sustained in trampoline accidents are fractures, but the more frightening statistic is that 12% of injuries were to the spinal cord. These types of injuries are much more serious and can result in partial or complete paralysis that affects the child for the rest of their life.

Trampoline Safety Tips

Some experts recommend that no one use trampolines because the risk of accidents and injury is too great. However, if your child is going to use a trampoline, you should follow these safety tips to minimize the risk of serious injuries:

  • Use the trampoline only with adult supervision
  • Inspect the trampoline for any broken or corroded pieces and discard the trampoline if there is any dangerous wear and tear
  • Keep an outdoor trampoline fenced to prevent unauthorized usage
  • Never allow children under the age of 6 on a trampoline
  • Only allow one person on the trampoline at a time
  • Do not attempt tricks while using the trampoline
  • Only jump in the center of the trampoline

If your child is injured on a trampoline at a friend’s house, trampoline park, or other recreational facilities, the property owner would most likely be responsible for their injuries under their liability insurance policy. An experienced personal injury lawyer can determine who would be responsible and fight for the rights of your child.

Possible Trampoline Accident Damages

Following a trampoline accident, the child’s legal guardian would have the option of making a claim against the negligent party’s insurance provider or pursuing a lawsuit. The possible trampoline accident damages you and your child may be entitled to vary with the specifics of your personal case and can include:

  • Current and future medical bills
  • Lost wages
  • Pain and suffering
  • Disability and disfigurement
  • Loss of enjoyment of normal life
  • Wrongful death
