Pool and Water Safety for Children
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), drowning remains the second-leading cause of “injury death” among children ages one to fourteen, and it remains a widespread problem despite not being covered as extensively as other common safety risks.
From 2005 to 2014, there were, on average, 3,535 non-boating drowning deaths per year, and about 20% of these deaths were children fourteen years or younger. Near-drowning accidents are also dangerous, as they can lead to low oxygen in brain-tissue (hypoxia) which can cause learning disabilities, memory problems, and impaired motor functions. Globally, drowning is still the third-leading cause of “unintentional death” among children.
Here are some safety tips to prevent drowning and water-related accidents:
– Make sure your children understand the importance of being aware of their surroundings to identify potential safety risks when swimming or playing near bodies of water.
– Make sure your children understand safety around boats, jet-skis, kayaks, and other watercraft and how to avoid motors and propellers.
– Because drowning can occur in as little as one inch of water, check both inside and outside your house for any water-accumulations such as bathtubs and storage bins inside and ponds and ditches outside.
– Water-collection containers inside or outside your home should be properly barred or guarded to prevent access by children.
– Make sure your pool area is properly gated and locked at appropriate times to prevent access by children.
– Make sure the pool area is free of toys which may attract children to the water.
