Four Dangerous Prescription Drugs
While most prescription drugs in the U.S. are FDA-approved, we are well aware of the serious problems posed by some dangerous medications before they are successfully recalled, such as the blood-thinner Xarelto, which has been linked to serious injuries and even death across the country.
Here are four common prescription drugs which have been linked to serious complications:
- Invokana – Invokana is a drug used to treat Type II Diabetes by using a transport protein to help expel sugar from the body through urine. However, it has been linked to acute kidney failure as well as ketoacidosis, an excessively acidic condition of body fluids or tissues with an accumulation of ketone bodies.
- Pradaxa and Xarelto – These are both anti-coagulants (blood thinners), though their mechanisms are different. Pradaxa is commonly prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke in patients who have atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), while Xarelto is prescribed to prevent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Both have been linked to life-threatening and fatal injuries, the most publicized of which have been uncontrollable bleeding and death.
- Zofran – Zofran is an FDA-approved anti-nausea medication for cancer patients. However, it has also been prescribed for the off-label purpose of treating extreme morning sickness for pregnant women, and studies found that unborn babies exposed to Zofran have suffered a range of birth defects, including: cleft palates; craniosynostosis (premature fusion of sutures between the skull’s growth plates); gastroschisis (defects in the anterior abdominal wall); cardiac defects, particularly septal defects; kidney defects; and neural tube defects.
- Risperdal – Risperdal is an anti-psychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorders. It has also been used to treat behavioral disorders such as ADHD. While it has been commonly prescribed to adolescents, its use in males has been linked to “gynecomastia,” which is the enlargement of breast tissue. These cases are permanent with no opportunity for corrective surgery.
