Cameras at traffic intersections are used to obtain footage of car accidents involving vehicles and/or pedestrians, and also function as speed cameras and can identify a variety of traffic violations.

Chicago’s red light camera program (The Red Light Camera Enforcement Program) began in 2003, beginning with just two camera locations which would become nearly 150 locations by 2021.

Today, red light camera intersections are all over the city of Chicago, and we have one of the nation’s most comprehensive enforcement systems for enforcing these violations using red light camera video to obtain the license plate number of the car’s registered owner.

While Chicago’s yellow lights are notoriously short, often at or approaching federal minimums, red light cameras are implemented in intersections based on the frequency and severity of accidents at those intersections, and red light tickets generated more than $74 million in fines in 2021 alone.

The Cost of a Red Light Ticket

In Illinois, a ticket for a red light violation typically costs about $100 and is received within one week of the violation. If the ticket is not paid in time, it may increase to $200 and the driver may also be subject to boot fees and/or towing charges.

Drivers who are ticketed for red light violations may view photo and video evidence of the violation on Chicago’s .gov website.

If you feel that you received a red light violation in error, you have seven (7) days from when the ticket was issued to contest the matter with the city. But remember: a red light ticket is considered an “administrative violation,” similar to parking tickets, and will not be part of your driving record.

Red Light Camera Violations

Red light violations, as the name suggests, typically involve driving through intersections on red lights, but can also involve turning on a red light in a “no turn on red” lane, as drivers may only turn right on a green light in certain locations.

Disobeying these traffic signals can not only cause accidents involving other cars on the road, but also fatal crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists who are highly vulnerable to motor vehicles. If an accident has occurred due to a driver’s negligence at a camera intersection, Chicago’s camera system will capture it and the red light video can be obtained.
